Ambassador Cousin on the importance of nutrition and the recognition of the role of women

/© Video: USEU/Office of Public Affairs/ Ertharin Cousin, Ambassador to the UN Agencies in Rome — Excerpts from Remarks to EU Policymakers, Opinion Leaders, NGO Representatives and Media in Brussels, May 26, 2010 Transcription: We also include nutrition as a key component of our work. As a part of this plan we are investing more in research to fortify staple crops with vitamins and nutrients. I was very pleased in conversations today with our colleagues from the EC when there was an acknowledgement and a confirmation of EC’s commitment to the research area, particularly on nutrition because we recognize that it’s not just that we provide additional food to people. But what is the food that we are providing? So nutrition must be a part of the food security program. Because it’s not just what we do in Washington or Brussels, it’s what work happens on the ground. Another game chanter, as we like to say, when I’m asked what makes this one different, is the recognition of the role of women. Because women make up 60 to 80 percent of small holder farmers around the world. Women and girls will receive the requisite attention and focus from the Feed the Future plan. Reducing gender inequality and supporting the contribution of women to agricultural productivity is critical to achieving global food security. There is consistent

Mr. Brady Jackson on Nutrition.

I met this guy and I just had to get it on camera. He is the wisest old man I’ve ever seen. He is currently writing a book, I will buy a copy. For the record, the first herb he has is not marijuana. It is a weed out of his yard, that he makes tea out of. So I was told.
